Heat your home from the earth beneath your feet
A ground source heat pump draws heat from the ground, it uses pipes which are buried in your garden to extract heat from the ground. You can then use this heat to heat radiators, under floor heating, warm air convectors and your hot water in your home.
How it works
Ground source heat pump systems are made up of a ground loop (water and antifreeze in a loop of pipe) which is buried underground with a heat pump at ground level. Heat from the ground is transferred into the fluid then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump. These pumps can be used all year round even in the middle of the winter as the ground stays at a fairly constant temperature under the surface.
Pros and cons of ground source heat pumps
Pros
-
The average gas boiler is 74% efficient, and the new A rated boilers are 90% efficient. So for every £1 you put in you get 90p worth of heat. A ground source heat pump on the other hand will give you between £2.00-£4.00 worth of heat for every £1 you put in!
-
A ground source heat could lower your Co2 emissions if replacing a conventional heating system
-
They can provide hot water as well as heat
-
They need little maintenance (they're called ‘fit and forget’ technology)
-
Ground Source Heat Pumps qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) - to qualify for the RHI your property has to undergo a a Green Deal assessment to assess your property's energy efficiency and insulation. If you property requires insulation than you could be eligible for Green Deal insulation.
Cons
-
You still need electricity to drive the pump, so a ground source heat pump will never have a zero-carbon footprint unless used with a renewable source like solar panels (photovoltaics)
-
Ground works are required to install a ground source heat pump, which can be expensive.
Ground Source Heat Pump considerations
-
Do you have a private outside area (garden) that you can install a ground source heat pump? As the installation of this product requires ground works.
-
Do you have another renewable energy source you could use in conjunction with this technology like solar panels or wind turbines? This will reduce the running costs of a ground source heat pump. This isn’t essential as you can just run it from your existing energy supply.
