Walls for Energy Efficiency, not windows
Traditional wall insulation is still the quickest and most cost effective way to make your home energy efficient.
Research suggests that more than a third of heat from a house is lost through walls without insulation.
Another major heat loss is through the roof which accounts for a quarter of overall energy loss.
More heat (15 per cent) is lost through the floor than through the windows, which only account for 10 per cent of heat loss.
Find out more about Wall Insulation
If your house was built after 1920 onward it’s likely to have cavity walls (this means they are made of two layers with a gap in the middle. Cavity wall insulation is made of mineral wool, beads, granules or foamed insulate and is pumped in between your exterior and interior walls to reduce heat loss.
External solid wall insulation can cut your heating costs by helping to stop heat escaping through your exterior walls. External wall insulation involves fixing insulation to the external walls, then covering with a special render or cladding to reduce heat loss through your external walls
Internal Solid Wall Insulation
Internal solid wall insulation can cut your heating costs by helping to stop heat escaping through your internal walls. Internal wall insulation involves fitting rolls or boards of insulation to your internal walls
Loft insulation stops the rising heat in your home escaping through your roof. If your loft is not insulated a quarter of your heat loss is through your roof.
