Power your home with sunlight

Solar panel electricity systems which are also known as solar photovoltaics (PV or solar panels), convert the energy from the sunlight into electricity.

How solar panels work

These panels capture this energy using photovoltaic cells, which don’t even need direct sunlight for this process, it can be a cloudy day and they can still create electricity. This can then be used to power your household appliances and lights.

Pros and Cons of Solar PV

Pros

  • You can cut your electricity bills, as once the system has been installed you can generate electricity for free because daylight costs nothing.

  • Your panels can be connected to the national grid, so any excess electricity you create can be sold back to the grid.

  • You can cut your electricity bills by approximately 40% (based on an average household).

  • The feed-in Tariff provides you with an additional income.

  • Panels are virtually maintenance free and should last at least 25 years.

Cons

  • A large roof area that is unshaded and south-facing in location is needed to install solar panels. If the pitch of the roof is shallow or flat it may accumulate leaves, dirt or bird droppings so may need occasional cleaning.

  • The efficiency does depend on daylight hours and the climate.

Are solar panels right for you?

  • Which way does your roof face? A south facing roof is best, but no essential.

  • If you are considering getting a heat pump Solar would be great as it would offset the energy you would use for the heat pump.
